E15 in Iowa: What Ethanol Blends Do to an Older Fuel System
Iowa pumps more ethanol than anywhere else and the discount is real. Whether your car should take it depends on its age, not the sticker.
Iowa drivers see ethanol blends at nearly every pump and a price spread worth taking, and for most vehicles on the road that is a straightforward win. Which vehicles are approved
The federal approval for E15 covers model year 2001 and newer passenger vehicles. Below that line the fuel system was engineered around ten percent ethanol at most, and the rubber and plastic components were specified accordingly. Higher blends attack those materials over time.
Your owner's manual and the label inside the fuel door are the authority for your particular car, and manufacturers do differ. Some warranties address blends above E10 explicitly. Flex-fuel vehicles are a separate category entirely and will say so on the badge, the fuel door, or with a yellow gas cap.
Everything with a small engine is a firm no: mowers, generators, chainsaws, snow blowers, boats, and motorcycles. Those fuel systems tolerate blended fuel poorly and the repairs are disproportionate to the machine.
What ethanol actually does
Ethanol is hygroscopic, meaning it draws moisture out of the air and holds it in suspension. In a vehicle driven regularly this is a non-issue because the fuel does not sit long enough to matter. In a vehicle parked for months, the water separates out and settles at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup is.
The second effect is solvency. Ethanol dissolves varnish and deposits that decades of straight gasoline laid down inside an older tank and fuel lines. Everything it loosens travels downstream to the filter and the injectors. That is why an older car sometimes runs worse after switching to a higher blend, and the fuel is not the fault so much as the messenger.
On seals and lines, older nitrile rubber swells and hardens with prolonged exposure to higher ethanol content. Anything built after the mid-nineties uses materials chosen with blends in mind.
Symptoms worth bringing in
Hard starting after a car has sat, rough idle that smooths out once warm, hesitation under load, or a check engine light reporting a lean condition all point toward fuel delivery. On a vehicle that has recently changed fuel diet, a clogged filter is the first suspect and it is an inexpensive place to start.
A fuel pump that has begun to whine is telling you something. Pumps are cooled and lubricated by the fuel around them, and running a tank persistently near empty shortens their life regardless of what is in it.
Storing anything over an Iowa winter
A car, boat, or mower going into storage should be handled deliberately. Fill the tank to roughly ninety percent, which limits the air space where condensation forms while leaving room for expansion. Add a stabilizer rated for ethanol blends and run the engine several minutes so the treated fuel reaches the whole system rather than sitting in the tank.
For small equipment the better answer is usually ethanol-free fuel, sold at a number of stations around the metro, or draining the system completely. A carburetor left full of blended fuel for six months is the most common spring repair we see on that equipment.
The practical position
If your vehicle is 2001 or newer and you drive it regularly, the higher blends are fine and the savings are real. If it is older, if it sits for long stretches, or if it is a collector car, stay with E10 or seek out ethanol-free.
Cars that have run exclusively on straight gasoline for many years deserve a filter change shortly after any switch, simply because of what the ethanol will loosen. That is a cheap precaution against an expensive injector cleaning.
Consistency helps more than optimization. Alternating between blends tank to tank gives you the drawbacks of both without settling into either, and the few cents saved rarely justify it.
Fuel economy and the price spread
Ethanol carries less energy per gallon than gasoline, so a higher blend delivers slightly fewer miles from the same volume. The difference between E10 and E15 is small enough that most drivers will not detect it, and the pump price gap in Iowa generally more than covers it.
Where the arithmetic changes is E85 in a flex-fuel vehicle. The energy content is substantially lower and the mileage penalty is real, so the discount has to be large before it works out. Running the numbers over a couple of tanks with your own vehicle and your own driving is more reliable than any published figure.
Neither blend damages an approved modern engine. The choice is economics rather than mechanical risk once the vehicle is on the approved list.
