What 0W-20 Actually Means When It Is Ten Below
The first number is the winter rating and it matters here more than most places. Using a heavier oil than specified does not protect a cold engine better.

Reading the two numbers
A grade like 5W-30 describes two behaviors. The number before the W is the oil's flow characteristic at low temperature; the number after it describes viscosity at operating temperature. Lower first numbers flow better when cold.
A 0W-20 and a 5W-20 behave identically once the engine is warm. The difference is entirely in how quickly the oil moves during the first seconds after a cold start, which in an Iowa January is exactly when wear happens.
Why thicker is not safer
There is a persistent belief that heavier oil protects better, and for a cold engine the reverse is true. Thick oil at low temperature resists flow, so the pump struggles and the top of the engine waits longer for pressure.
Modern engines also depend on oil pressure to operate variable valve timing and chain tensioners. Those systems are designed around a specific viscosity, and oil that is too heavy causes faults that look electrical.
The specification in the manual is not a suggestion from the marketing department. It reflects clearances the engine was built with.
Synthetic and the cold-start question
Full synthetic holds its flow characteristics at low temperature far better than conventional oil, which is the strongest argument for it in this climate regardless of the interval it permits.
Most vehicles specifying 0W grades require synthetic anyway, because conventional base stocks cannot achieve that rating.
Intervals and short trips
Manufacturer intervals assume a mix of driving. A pattern of short winter trips where the engine never fully reaches temperature is severe service, because moisture and fuel condense into the oil and never boil off.
The visible sign is a light tan deposit under the oil cap, which is condensed moisture rather than a head gasket in most cases. It indicates the engine is not getting warm enough for long enough.
Shortening the interval is the straightforward answer, and so is taking one longer drive a week.
Checking it in cold weather
Check the level with the engine warm and the car level, a few minutes after shutdown so the oil has drained back. Cold thick oil on a dipstick reads misleadingly.
Consumption rises in winter on some engines and a level checked monthly catches a developing problem long before a warning light does.
Filters and the cold-start bypass
Oil filters contain a bypass valve that opens when the pressure differential across the filter is too high, which happens when oil is thick and cold. Oil then reaches the engine unfiltered until things warm up.
A quality filter with a properly functioning anti-drainback valve matters here, since it keeps the filter full during shutdown so pressure comes up quickly on the next start.
What happens if the wrong grade goes in
A single oil change with a grade slightly off specification will not destroy an engine. Sustained use of the wrong viscosity does cause problems, and they show up as variable valve timing faults, chain tensioner noise, and in some engines increased consumption.
Vehicles under warranty add another consideration, since a manufacturer can decline a claim where the specified lubricant was not used. Keeping the receipt that shows the grade matters as much as the service itself.
Where a quick-lube has used a house-brand bulk oil, the invoice should still name the grade and the specification it meets. If it does not, that is worth asking about.
Topping up between changes
Adding a different grade in an emergency is better than running low. Oil level matters more than perfect grade matching in the short term, and mixing two grades of the same specification is not harmful.
Carry a quart of the correct oil in the vehicle if it uses any. Engines that consume oil rarely stop, and being a quart low is measurably worse than being a quart of the wrong grade high.
Record the date and mileage whenever you add some, because a consumption rate that is rising tells you something a single check cannot.
